The Sete Cidades Lagoon

Did you know that the Sete Cidades Lagoon consists of two portions of water, the Blue Lagoon and the Green Lagoon?

The Sete Cidades Lagoon, which apparently seems to be divided in two (Blue Lagoon and Green Lagoon) is, in fact, a single and the largest natural freshwater reservoir in the Azores.

The reason for the different colors can be explained by the depth and the concentration of algae in the ponds.

With breathtaking viewpoints this is a true natural monument.

From the Vista do Rei viewpoint, through the Boca do Inferno viewpoint, to the Cerrado das Freiras viewpoint, all of these allow for different perspectives of the lagoon.

In this “sleeping” volcano you can also find the lagoons of Santiago, Canário, Lagoa Rasa and Empadadas. These are smaller lagoons, hidden, but stunning when it comes to natural landscape, views and surrounding flora.

In the surroundings of Sete Cidades Lagoon it is possible to practice several types of activities. From water sports to hiking and horseback riding, mountain biking and bird and endemic species watching.

Sete Cidades Lake was nominated as one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal and classified as a Protected Landscape.
